Language Learning and Mental Health Awareness Week 2022

Updated: May 11, 2022

The Digital Language Hub is supporting Mental Health Awareness Week.

Well, to be honest, I am constantly supporting a positive mindset, as a passion, as a mom and as a survivor of domestic abuse and stalking.

So, we all know mental health issues are on the rise, especially in our younger generations but did you know that learning a foreign language has been proven to improve mental health in a variety of ways?

Learning a foreign language pushes you into learning new ideas, getting out your comfort zone and meeting new people.

As you’re exercising your brain, you’re improving cognitive functions which help with increased attention control and helps with memory.

I read that Concordia University did a study to see how being bilingual reflects on children's life views. The results showed ‘bilingual children believed that individual traits come from experience rather than being inherited. Monolingual children had opposite beliefs.’ Learning a new language literally opens your mind.

Another fact is that learning a foreign language can help delay the onset of dementia, help with brain injury recovery and stroke victims. "Bilingualism makes people switch from one language to another, so while they inhibit one language, they have to activate another to communicate. This switching offers practically constant brain training which may be a factor in helping stroke patients recover," – Thomas Bak, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.

Learning a language really does help boost your confidence, improves multitasking skills and life skills.

Depression and isolation have become too common.

Exercise, lifestyle and brain training are excellent tools to help depression and joining language lessons has so many positive benefits!

Learning a language is fun! I mean, really fun and we laugh, a lot. It is an excellent way to meet like-minded people, learn and just have fun!
